Back to Work
December 9, 2015

After my surgery I only missed 6 days of work. Since I wasn't able to drive that soon I used Uber and Lyft to get to work and back. I even got some free ride credit for being a new rider.

Knee Surgery
December 3, 2015

Today I had surgery on my right knee to reconstruct my ACL, a ligament connecting the femur to the tibia - I think. My parents took care of me before and after the operation, the doctor and nurses were all caring and kept me at ease the whole time. Of course I was knocked out with general anesthesia and didn't feel anything. I have a long road to recovery with more physical therapy, but I hope to be walking without a limp or crutches in a month or two, biking in 3 months and running in 6 months. Just doing what the professionals tell me to do and very thankful for a supportive family, friends and others in my life.

Visiting my parents for Thanksgiving this weekend. Usually this involves a game or two of cribbage and for the first time I can remember I my mom and I had the exact same hand.

Cal Poly Football
November 14, 2015

I went to the Cal Poly vs UC Davis football game with my parents today. It was probably one of the best college football games I've every been to because there was a lot of scoring and Cal Poly won.

New Clothes
November 11, 2015

This Veterans Day I got around to buying some new winter new clothes! Although not everything is pictured (because I'm either wearing it or it's in the mail) I got a new winter coat, 4 pairs of pants and 4 pairs of shoes. I'm not the type of person to leisurely show for clothes, going to the mall every weekend and buying 1 thing each visit. I'll go to the mall once or twice a year and buys a lot of stuf all at once!

Boorito

Another Halloween and another discounted burrito from Chipotle. But only for costumed customers after 5pm. Trust me, I've done this before.

Car Wash
October 25, 2015

My sincere apologies go out to the State of California and the water district I live in for washing my car in my drive way this afternoon. I'm not supposed to do this with the drought and everything. My first car wash of the entire year (not counting gas station "car washes" with the window washer, yes I do that sometimes!).

I estimated I used at most 5 gallons of water washing my car. Which is about the same as 4-5 minutes of a shower or sink head running. So to wash my car in my drive way once a year is not something I going to lose any sleep over.

St Louis Visit
October 24 27, 2015

Today I made a quick stop in St. Louis (see the St. Louis Arch behind me), and by St. Louis I mean the Toyota display at the Sac Auto Show where they were taking photos of people in front of different national landmarks as a promotional thing because Toyota's slogan is involves people "going places". I have no major desire to ever see St. Louis. I have other places to go first is all.

I conquored the corn maze in Dixon once again.
Wasn't sure if I would make it this year but I did.

Natomas Hike

I hiked around the north shore of Lake Natoma this evening. Usually I'm biking around this area so it was nice to be able to climb a hill side and a get a good view of the reservoir and surrounding landscape.

Footgolf
August 2, 2015

I gave footgolf a try for the first time this afternoon. I was teamed up with a few other guys and ended up with a score of 86 over an 18 hole course. It was fun, and I plan to go with Tom and Micah sometime.

Running of the Tim Bull
July 25, 2015

I've been trying out a beginning volleyball league on Tuesday nights. The picture below is on the 'Theme Night' where our team decided to do a 'Running of the Bulls' theme. But just one bull - me! I wanted to be the bull and wear the all black and horned helmet. The picture is supposed to be my team running from the Tim bull.

Agar.io
July 25, 2015

I'm blaming Tom for getting me hooked on this game, Agar.io. I'm basically a dot on the screen who tries to eat other dots to get bigger. There are a few other aspects to the game but overall pretty addicting. In the screen shot below I reached #1 rank in the room for the first time - I named my player "x" but it could be anything at most 14 characters.

Curly Fries
July 21, 2015

Tonight at the State Fair I almost finished an entire loaf of curly fries. Not the healtiest thing I've ever eaten but it was a challenge excepted. Next year! Overall the Fair was really fun - first time going on a week night. I won a new stuffed animal too.

Republic Soccer
June 20, 2015

Went to my first Republic FC Soccer game this evening. It was a good game. The home team won 2-1. I sat in the cheering section and it got pretty loud. Great views, not one bad seat at Bonney field. Definitely going back some time.

Catan Blowout
June 14, 2015

On the plane ride back from Oregon I absolutely crushed the other 3 oppononents (computer) I played in a 4-player game of Catan. I usually win, and usually second place will score 9 or 10 or 11 in a game to 16. But today my opponents scored 3 and 4 and 4, when I won with 16!

Amgen
May 10, 2015

Today marked Day 1 of a week-long bicycle "Tour de California". The best bicyclists in the world are at this event and I was lucky that today's race started and stopped here in Sacramento. My parents came to visit for Mother's Day! And we watched the ending of the race as the route circled Capitol Mall for the final 7 miles.

Backyard Lemons
May 3, 2015

When the backyard gives me lemons, I make lemonade. I tried this a couple years ago and didn't really like it. Tried it again this afternoon and like it! With no added sugar it actually tastes pretty good. With probably 30-40 more lemons on the tree should last me a month or so of lemonade. Come get your lemonade people!

Picnic Day
April 18, 2015

Third year in a row I've gone to Picnic Day at UC Davis and I see something new each year. Pictured below is a laser harp and a 2d groundwater model. If I put my hand in the harp box then the laser will make a noise if it registers an interference. The groundwater model demonstrated an artesian well, hydraulic head, gradelines and contamination. Well done Davis.

Tim and Dinger
April 10, 2015

One of my favorite pictures in a while. I went to the River Cats game tonight and Dinger was walking the other direction amongst the fans and I was able to get this picture. I was at the game with some people from a Facebook group page. The team lost 0-2, but there were fireworks afterwards and parking was free.

WordPress
April 4, 2015

Reportely 1 in every 4 websites are created using the WordPress frame work so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I watched a few tutorial videos and later converted my Optimal Graphics blog from a pure html website to a site using the WordPress frame work (pictured below). Here's the original. Here's the new site.

I'm also evaluating using WordPress for a future website, so I'm testing a few needed features that I'll need. I plan to convert a few other of my small/simple websites to WordPress because of it's built in SEO hooks and responsive deisgn - it looks more professional. I went to a WordPress meetup at Hacker lab to rub shoulders with those more expert than I am. But the jury is still out as to if I plan to use WordPress for my more advanced sites. Altogether worth the time and effort to investigate.

Bike Jersey
March 28, 2015

Today I hit the trail for the first serious ride of the year. Awesome weather and awesome bike jersey I got for Christmas with logos for my schools and projects. The picture doesn't do it justice so you'll have come biking with me sometime to really see it.

DWR Employee
March 15, 2015

This month I officially started as a DWR employee. I've been working here for almost a year and a half, mostly as a consultant. Now I actually have a badge which allows me to get in after hours. And they showed me the secret handshake. I took this picture while on a bike ride which explains my helmet hair.

Front Yard Planter
March 8, 2015

Not the most glamarous picture below, but evidence that I'm starting to improve the pile of dirt and weeds into something with more curb appeal. In front (along the curb) are 3 white Geraiums; behind them is a golden poppy plant.

Paint Nite
March 1, 2015

Over the past couple months I've been doing these one-time paint classes. I have lots of empty walls at home and I like the paint activity and even the final product is too bad, unless you look at it. So I've done 3 so far this year. Haven't decided where in the house to hang them yet.

Funderland
February 21, 2015

Today was my first time at Funderland. They have all sorts of rides for little kids, but adults can still go on some of the rides, as I demonstrate in the picture below. The weight limit on the plane ride is 175lb and my knees didn't exactly fit inside the cockpit but whatever. Definitely a fun thing to do with my brother's family.

Computer Science Degree
February 5, 2015

It took me 7 quarters spanning most of 2013 and all of 2014 to complete my Computer Science degree through Oregon State's online degree program. I'm happy to be done and I thank everyone who supported me in this endeavour. I recieved transcripts in the mail last week and I received the diploma in the mail today. I'm looking forward to the graduation ceremony in June!

Kings With Tom
February 3, 2015

Tom and I watched the Sacramento Kings host the Golden State Warriors this evening. It was actually a Christmas gift from Tom and I was lucky he was available to go to this with me. The Warriors ended up winning the game, as they are one of the best teams in the NBA this year. Thanks Tom! :)

Find Store Locator
January 31, 2015

Another week, another single page app. Introducing Find Store Locator. This websites allows users to find the store locator page of the store of interest.

I'm using the word "store" broadly because I plan to include hotels, rental car companies, restaurants - essentially any business with a store locator page popular enough for me to deem worthy. At the time of this post I only have 100 "stores" and their store locator urls saved in my database, but I plan to increase that number in time.

Couldn't a user just do a google search? Or bookmark the individual locator pages of interest? Yes and yes. I'm not sure this idea will catch on, but I wanted to give it a shot and see what happens.

Balls of Fire
January 27, 2015

Last week I started Xoso bowling. It's my new Tuesday night activity for the next couple months. I bowled 158 and 131 last week, but two of the girls on the team (of 6 total bowlers) are significantly better than me. So we have a pretty good team. :)

Free Table Topics
January 24, 2015

Today I finished a single page website called Free Table Topics. This site is to help people working on their impromptu public speeaking. If you're familiar with Toastmasters, "Table Topics" is the portion of the meeting where speakers have 1 to 2 minutes to speak on a topic without prior planning. If you're like me and want to improve your public speaking, this website will generate a random topic to speak on and includes a timer.

The site is pretty self explanatory. First you click the blue button to get a topic, then you click the green start button to start the timer and then it's up to you talk for 1 to 2 minutes. The background on the screen turns green after 1 minute to notify the speaker they can stop. The screen background turns yellow and red at 1:45 and 2:00, but these times can all be changed - even while the timer is running. Also, the time can be hidden, if so desired.
