Family Christmas Party
December 20, 2014

My parents hosted a family Christmas dinner party tonight at their home in Walnut Creek. It turned out to be 20 people and a well hosted party! I was tasked to put together a highlight video, which can be found here. In the second picture below I'm trying to pour a specific volume of wine into a wine glass, blindfolded. If that's not enough, I'm being timed by Tom, on the right. These sorts of things happen with us Nelsons.

This week 2 of my facebook fan pages have exploded with likes. I'm not sure why, but I'm not complaining!

My Engineering Video FB Page was started about 4 years ago, and before this month had about 800 likes. Now it has 3,100 likes.

My Civil PE Exam FB Page was started about 2 years ago, and before this month had about 500 likes. Now it has 3,300 likes.

1000 Pieces
December 6, 2014

Tonight myself, Jason and Krisin finished a 1,000 piece puzzle. It's a snowy Chistmas picture by Thomas Kincade of Radio City Music Hall. It was laying out on the kitchen table for a few weeks, but we finally got it together.

I returned to the Painted Cork to try my luck at the Golden Gate Bridge at night. But don't stand too close, because at a distance it doesn't look half bad.

Android Phone
November 20, 2014

Not long after buying an iPhone I went ahead and bought an Android Phone as well. The reason behind this purchase is because I needed an Android phone for my mobile/cloud software class. It was cheaper to buy a $30 phone and write apps for Android than buy a $500 computer and write apps for the iPhone. I wrote an app to take a picture and to use the acceleratometers, basically I copied someone else's code because it was a learning exercise.

I had a blowout win in fantasy football this week. Usually more than 100 points will win a game, but not against Tim's Tornadoes this week!

I went to Fairy Tale Town this morning with Tom, Nicole, Micah and Ellie. I got Micah a gift certificate to this place for his birthday earlier this year and we finally found a time to go!

Levi Stadium
November 8, 2014

My parents and I toured the SF 49ers new football stadium this afternoon, "Levi Stadium". We got to see a lot of behind the scenes locations that people on game day aren't allowed to see, such as the going up onto the roof, the locker rooms, down to the field level and the clubs. I ended up posing for a few goofy photos. I chouldn't help myself! :) Our tour guide said some pretty unbelievable things, which was made even funnier by a few gullible tourists, "is that beam made of gold."

The tour included admission to the 49ers museum, which is part of the stadium. The museum was bomb. It started with a 20 minute video and ended with the 49ers F as in five Lombardi Trophies and championship rings on display. Thanks mom and dad!

Bike Party
November 7, 2014

Tonight was my very first Bike Party Sacramento event. The first Friday night of the month features a new ride with a new theme. Tonight's ride was "wear a mask" ride, but I was more surprised with how many people fixed their bikes up with fancy lights. It was a fun thing to do, but I plan to get some lights for my bike for next time. Here is a link to a short video someone made from the ride.

Firefox
October 31, 2014

For Halloween this year I was Firefox. Ordered up a full-body fox costume and big blue beach bal. A lot of people didn't recognize my costume beyond that of just a generic fox. But some people knew exactly new what I was going for. Got second place at a costume contest and had about a dozen people request photos with me which was cool. I should have asked for them to send me the picture so I could post it here and so I could collect numbers, lol. Next year!

Six Plus
October 24, 2014

I ended up getting the iPhone 6+. It's partially an early graduation gift, but also nice to have a bigger display - since I don't use a tablet computer. I also got it because there was a mail-in rebate for my old phone and I think it will be helpful for my mobile/cloud software course I'm taking right now.

Linked In
October 16, 2014

I've heard lots of good things about Linked In. And I've experienced a recent taste of connection from it as well. It's another way to connect with people through work, which could lead to friendships and friendships involving business. I finally started taking my linked in profile seriously, I completed the profile which sort of like a resume. Then I began requesting connections from people I've worked with. Having a strong LinkedIn profile page and lots of connection with people in the same or similar king of work can't hurt!

Just this evening there was a LinkedIn hangin at the Hacker Lab. I was too exhausted from work and school to attend this event, but I really wish I had the energy to make it and hear about how to emprove business prospects with LinkedIn - next time!

Lake Clementine
October 4, 2014

Since summer just doesn't seem to quit this year (90+ degrees this weekend), I decided to go for an Auburn hike. I never remember how much I like this area until I'm actually out here. Today I hiked 8 miles near Lake Clementine. I explored a few new areas but didn't explore as much as I wanted because I was getting tired. Next year Auburn, next year!

September 27, 2014

This afternoon I finished the Dixon corn maze in 1 hour, 26 minutes and 54 seconds, for a total of 2.41 miles of hiking. :) I could have gone faster, but I just needed a time to beat next year (this was my first year timing myself). This year was a solo effort but I plan to do this again with friends in future years. If you've never done this maze it's well worth a try!

Hug Fest
September 20, 2014

As part of the Conscious Life Workshop I attend in Vegas about a month ago, for the last few hours our group participated in an experiential group activity. Although it wasn't my vote, the group decided to do a hug fest. Hug Fest involved making signs that said 'free hugs' and other short positive messages, then offering free hugs to strangers in downtown Las Vegas for a 20 minute time period. The YouTube video was recently sent out to the group participants and I reposted it on my own YouTube channel. Here's the video. At first I didn't see myself in the video, but upon second watch I managed to see myself for split second between 0:40 and 0:50 in the video. I'm wearing a dark gray t-shirt.

September 13, 2014

With some little free time between classes I chose to clean up and organize the garage this week. I bought a work bench and organized some tools on a pegboard. Put my tools in boxes and or bins or on new storage racks. I also bought a new bike - so I'm up to 3 bikes now.

DWR Digital Submittal Suite
September 4, 2014

The Department of Water Resoures has a new way of processing submittals, it goes by the name of a horse called Secretariat. I built Secretariat and continue to add features (see my to do list in the last image). Ancillary programs used for DWR and contractors to upload submittals are called 'Skip' and 'Forklift'. It's exciting to be a part of (all of) this development.

Below are screenshots, Secretariat and Skip are behind firewalls, but here is Forklift, but the first page is a login so that doesn't help much. The programs do too much to explain here, but I got a few people to smile, which is important.

CEPE Experience
August 29, 2014

Today I launched a Civil PE Exam Experience page on Engineering Videos. The purpose is to gather input from my website visitors about their experience with the exam. Once enough quality material is collected I plan to categorize everything and make it into a book.

It's just an idea - maybe a dumb one, but I got better at building image uploads and graphing for web applications. Users can view their uploaded posts and image(s) after they post and view the total words contributed on a bar graph. I also list the last contributor's name and location near the bottom of the Engineering Videos Home Page.

In the first 12 hours my only contribution was some guy from Pakistan submitting his resume. He selected "PA" for state which is meant to be Pennsylvania, not Pakistan - haha. Not sure if it was a joke, but at least it beats someone posting something obscene haha. My logo for this page is the sophisticated cat meme, where the cat is all dressed up nice and reading his morning paper while pondering doing something a cat would never do.

Conscious Life Workshop
August 24, 2014

I attended a 3-day event in Las Vegas this weekend, design to help people focus on having a happy lifestyle, while doing work they enjoy and making money. Of those three, we were taught to first focus on having a happy lifetyle and then only seek opportunities for work and money that fit with that lifestyle. An example of what not to do is to pursue money at the expense of lifestyle. A person may end up a 20 millionaire, but if they're stuck working 80 hour weeks then the money is inconsequential and they're probably unfulfilled. This has given me some things to think about becuase I'll have some future career decisions to be making in the coming year.

The note page below is what one of the attendees posted on dropbox and shared on the CLW Facebook Group Page. It identifies a number of key topics discussed, but doesn't give the reader enough detail to help as much as it would be to actually be there in person for 3 days. I made that image bigger so it's easier to read.

There were about 125 people in attendance. The workshop was held at the Golden Nugget, which is the downtown part of Las Vegas. I didn't see this part of town when I was here a few years ago, and it did not disappoint. I plan to return Vegas!

Tom Moves the Party
August 1, 2014

Tom, Nicole, Micah and Ellie moved to Davis today. A number of us helped them unload their belongings on what turned out to be the hottest day of the last two years. They will continue their work with the Navigators as part of UC Davis. It's great to have them so much closer than they were when living in SLO. The picture of me carrying a drawer was taken by Micah, using my Mom's phone camera. Good picture Micah!

Today for my dad's birthday we went biking 62 miles! It wasn't my best bike ride because I wasn't in as good of shape as last year, and I had a couple flats along the way. Regardless, it was a good ride and great and glad I went.

June 21, 2014

A good friend and I went to the Sac Zoo Luau this evening. It was a fundraiser for the zoo. A number of local wineries and specialty food shops set up a table and provide their food or beverage for a few hours into the evening. It was also fun to see some of the animals, such as the flamingos, lemurs and the lion.

I finally got around to taking the Hornblower tour of the Sacramento River. It starts and stops at Old Town Sacramento and travels a few miles north and south of the port and talks about the history of Sacramento and stuff. Our tour guide was reading from a paper which made things amusing at times. Altogether a good tour and I definitely recommend this for tourists who are looking for this sort of activity.

SLO Weeekend
June 1, 2014

This weekend Sara and I went down to San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay to hang out with Tom, Nicole, Micah and Ellie. Sort of make up for not making Ellie's 1st birthday a few weeks prior. In just a couple days we packed in some aerobie golf, firestones, munchkin (card game), playtime with the kids. I might even transition into a chickentarian, which is a vegetarian with a little bit of chicken - the Carl Jr chicken sandwitch is partly responsible for this.

Today I went to a family gathering in Lodi, CA for a new home / engagement party for my consin Koryn and her fiancee Jerry. It turns out the wedding is just a couple miles from my home, which is awesome. I've been making steady progress on getting my Tim Nelson Services businesses developed. Last month I bought business cards and started the website, which is currently just a single static page which lists who I am and what I do. Today I registered my EIN and opened a business account at the bank. Once it arrives I plan to load quickbooks and learn how to use that program. Eventually I'll be ready and need find some work, right? :)
