Night Boarding
January 7, 2017

I never heard about night boarding until a few days ago. And tonight I went to my first night boarding at Boreal. The lift ticket was $45 to go boarding from 3pm to 9pm. It worked out well. I carpooled with my roommate and one of her friends. I got in a half day of work in the mroning and we didn't have any traffic getting up there or back.

I decided to paint over some of my Catan game pieces to create a silver team. Just in time for my New Year's Eve game night with friends.

Orange Helmet
December 26, 2016

First day back to snowboarding after my knee surger last December. Everything went well. I bought a new orange helmet, and later relized I already had a helmet. My other helmet fits better, but my orange helmet looks cooler. I went with the orange helmet today.

Pie Face
December 25, 2016

I stopped by Woodland to visit Tom and his family on Christmas night and ended up palaying Pie Face with Tom and Micah. Tom took a video of me getting "Pied" and I added a couple edits to the short video below.

Family Christmas Party
December 24, 2016

It's true, the Nelson family cribbage championship trophy has left Mossglen and now resides at my parents house in Walnut Creek following a defeat to my mom during the annual tournament. Here's a picture of me reluctactly passing the trophy on.

Family Christmas Party
December 17, 2016

The big Nelson/Marshall Family party took place in Walnut Creek this year. My mom and dad hit another homerun with great food and games and people. Highlights include Maven's first Christmas, See's Candies, Tom's Yams, and Scott's disembodied head.

Here I am posing beside Buddy the Elf over on Dovewood Court. This cul-de-sac has one of the best Christmas light displays in the area, and I happened to be over that way this evening.

What Did The Fox Say
December 3, 2016

I went to the Jingle Ball concert at Cal Expo tonight in my Fox Costume. I also brought a totem sign. It was fun, but tiring to have the costume AND sign all night. Probably got 50+ pictures with random people wanting to take a picture with me.

Turkey at Mossglen
November 24, 2016

This was my first time hosting Thanksgiving. My dad did all the heavy lifting by doing most the planning and by cooking the turkey. Tom and I helped out with the food too. In addition to food, there were a couple Scavenger Hunts and House Olympics to round out the evening.

Dragon
October 31, 2016

Happy Halloween everybody. Today was a long day at work, but I still managed to hit up a boorito at Chipotle with a friend. Here I am rocking my Dragon onesie, which I originally bought earlier in the year to watch Game of Thrones in. I'm becoming a fan of the onesie. The dragon is my first!

Foxy Century
October 15, 2016

Today I rode the Foxy Century bike ride with Tom and Dad. It started and stopped in Davis, CA, and looped westward towards Lake Barryessa, then down to Highway 80, then back. The conditions were very good, we had a tail window heading back and no rain despite a real possibility. I got a flat and a bee sting, but still finished strong and can't wait for next year. That being said I'm probably going to call this my last serious bike ride of the calendar year as the winter weather begins.

Jetta Sale
October 9, 2016

Sold my Jetta today. I posted it on Craigstlist in the morning and started getting texts right away. I ended up selling it for $1,800 which was quite a bit more than the KBB price of $1,000. Below are a few final pictures after I cleaned out my belongings and cleaned the car up. Good bye GeorgeJetta. A great first car, a gift from my parents in May 2001.

DWR SoCal Trip
September 28, 2016

The past few days I went on a work trip Monday - Wednesday down to Southern California to a few office and field locations for part of my job at the Department of Water Resources. We went to Perris Lake where the dam embankment was being raised. We visited the East Branch Extension Field Office where where a new pump station was being constructed. A third stop too. At each stop my coworker and I talked and demonstrated our applications.

Camping is in Tents
July 20, 2016

I went camping for the first time in a long time this weekend. Campfire, tents, swimming in lakes, all good fun. I went with a meetup group so I didn't have to deal with packing food. I intend to improve my camping skills as I go on more trips. Camping Level 1 completed.

RAV4
July 7, 2016

I bought a new car this evening. I new 2016 Toyota RAV4. My Jetta was having problems for a long time now, and the heat of summer was only making matters worse. The RAV4 is awesome! Nice to have reliable transportation, with pretty good fuel efficiency for an SUV.

Tri4Real
June 26, 2016

Today I participated in a Tri4Real triathlon in Herald, CA, at Rancho Seco Park. My total time was just over 3 hours. Not great, but I was itching to give it a try. My swim and bike times were respectable, but my 10k run was slow, 60 minutes. I was hot and tired, and I was taking it easy on my knee. Overall a success.

Rafting Gone Wild
June 25, 2016

I've lived in the Sacramento area for 5.6 years now and I finally floated down the river for the first time. The river is located less than a mile from my house. I dropped in near Sunrise in Rancho Cordova and floated for a couple hours, along side thousands of other people. Lots of fun, squirt guns, water fights, boom boxes. I bought an innertube that morning because it was a last minute decision, but a good one and I plan to return. The event was loosely organized with the help of a facebook event page, shown below.

Tahoe Bike Ride

I bike around Lake Tahoe today. For my current level of fitness it was a good distance, with a good amount of climbing. The event was well run and it was good weather. Video

Tahoe Hike
June 4, 2016

I hiked along the Tahoe Rim Trail today for about 6 or 7 miles. I was on the southeast corner of the lake. There were not a ton of lake views during my hike, but the trail was awesome, and extended well past the area I had time to explore.

Whole House Fan
May 5, 2016

My biggest home purchase of the year so far this year. This fan fits in the ceiling of the hallway and sucks air from the outside, through the house, up into the crawl space above the ceiling, and finally out the house through the vents. Make sure enough windows are open inside the house before turning on. Should save my air condition some run time this summer. The first picture is the fan as it's being installed. The final installation includes a cover and vents that lie flat when the fan is not in operation. The second picture below shows a temperature sensor I installed in the crawl space above the ceiling.

Cycle Folsom
May 1, 2016

May is bike month, here in the Sacramento area, apparently. People log their miles and are grouped/categorized by employer and a few other factors. Here's the link May is Bike Month. I'm near in top biking shape right now. Partially because I can't run and I'm itching to exercise.

Yesterday I did a 60 mile ride, and today I went 40 miles with this Cycle Folsom group. It was my first time riding with this group and there were about 120 people on this particular ride - all strong cyclists. I might have to ride with this group again, but it's also nice to be able to stop and end a ride for home.

Cribbage Meetup
April 28, 2016

This evening I went to a Cribbage Meetup and there were about 10 people there. It went from 5-8pm, and I got there late, at like 7:15pm haha. This meetup repeats every Thursday so I might have to go back. The guy putting it on claims to be the 2006(?) Cribbage World Champion. And he was really good, and couldn't stop talking about tip and strategy.

Circuits Lab
April 24, 2016

I randomly sat in on a ciruits laboratory for a couple hours this afternoon at the Hacker Lab. We built a couple circuits and lit up an LED using different resistors in series and parallel. Pretty simple to do and understand. I might go to the next class where they talk about programming circuits.

Bike Loops
April 23, 2016

I'm trying to increase my bike mileage. Today I rode 55 miles out to El Dorado Hills and back (see map below). I found to identify a few good bike loops in the Sacramento area.)

Warriors BBall
April 3, 2016

Tom and I went to the Warriors basketball game at Oracle Arena in Oakland. Tom is the master of making up dumb jokes on the spot. What's the favorite food of a witch that lives on the beach? No, it's pizza. Anyway, the game great. The Warriors actually scored more points in this game than any other game all season. And the Warriors won a lot of games this season. ;)

Andrew Rayel
March 19, 2016

Another rave. Andrew Rayel was just 1 of 5 artists playing. Only problem was that it was on a Wednesday night and went until 3am, so I left before that. I think they were catering to the college students who were on spring break. Either way, more exciting than the average Wednesday night.

Flower Farm
March 19, 2016

Nestled up in the hills south of Placerville in Amador County is a place called Flower Farm. Ironically this is the only picture I found on my phone from the event. Underwhelming, sure. But there were a lot of wineries with wine tasting out that direction too - which some people are into.

Life in Color
March 3, 2016

If you've ever heard of a 'color run' then you can probably relate to a color concert. This show was pretty bomb and they sprayed everyone with paint. It was really quite a mess after not too long. There were paint cannons up front, and individuals also bought and splashed their own paint. Just when I thought I was beyond the splash zone I learned otherwise. The music was good too.

Jury Duty

I got out of the Jury selection today. I got to miss 3 days of work and sit through attorneys asking questions of the jury about their profession and potential biases. Pretty boring but I'm clear for another couple years.

White is the New Blue
February 19, 2016

I'm putting in a few hours of work to fix up the new condo before turning the keys over to the property management company. The largest single repair I'm doing is painting the kitchen. It used to be a baby blue, but I'm making it white. In the next couple weeks the property management has someone contracted to power clean the carpet and I have an electrician coming to install some new lights and fans in the bathrooms and in the laundry closet. So far so good!

Alta Garden Lane
February 16, 2016

Today I closed escrow on a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo in the Arden Arcade neighborhood of Sacramento, located at 2380 Alta Garden Lane, Unit B. I've been looking for an investment property since last summer on and off and I liked this property enough to put in an offer. It was born in 1983, just like me and has new countertops in the kitchen and the bathrooms. I'm having a property management company deal with renters and bills to start and see how I like that arrangement.

The picture below is only the second time I was in the condo. It was after my offer had been accepted and I was there for the inspection. The other images came from a real estate website. The property backs to Alta Arden and has a view out over the complex pool from the front side of the unit. Nice to be close to done with the home-buying process. More work than I remember, but I'm happy with the purchase!

Orange Tree Take 2
February 13, 2016

Today I had a birthday lunch with my parents and brother's family over in Davis. I got a ton of awesome gifts. One gift was a new orange tree, so I planted it later that day. I was also pleased to notice my orange tree from last year is still alive. So I clipped off some dead branches and hope it will be able to regain some momentum.

Sewing Machine
February 6, 2016

I received a sewing machine for Christmas from my parents and finally got around to my pocket project. I expanded/deepened the pockets on 4 pairs of pants I purchased a few months ago. My sewing skills are nothing to brag about but I got the job done. One pocket had a blowout I have since fixed, but overall the project was a success!

Physical Therapy
February 2, 2016

I've been doing physical therapy dating back to October 2015, so about 4 months now! I took a break for a month right after surgery and I'm winding up now that it's been more than 2 months since surgery. These people showed me some good exercises to do to help me before and after surgery for my knee injury. Here I am pictured on the exercise bicycle, warming up before the main exercises.

Bike Ride
January 30, 2016

Below is an image summarizing my bike ride this morning. It was about 17 miles in distance and about 13 miles per hour in speed. I went on a 6 mile bike ride the day before and the weekend before. The biking is good for my knee because it's strengthing muscle and getting my new ACL to feel at home.

Linked In DWR
January 21, 2016

I reached the 4th most viewed profile on Linked In, for all DWR employees today. I helped make this happen by sending out a lot of connection requests to my Engienering Videos subscribers, which resulted in an increase in page views and connections made. Not sure how long this will last, but nice to enjoy the prestige while it lasts.

Family Holiday Party
January 2, 2016

Tonight was the Nelson-Marshall Holiday Party. It was down in Cupertino, CA and I got a ride with Tom and Nicole and the kids. We had a competition for the longest popcorn throw, highest house of cards, most m and m transfer and highest paper airplane throw. Paul and Jen were the head organizers and won. Nothing suspicious about that. And I think I beat only 3 people. But the food was great and the company was also great! I made a spinash artichoke cheese cracker dip which came out pretty good, since it was my very first time making it.
